Mark Steyn

If I were an anti-war leftie, I'd be very depressed by the Iraq anniversary protests. A few hundred people show up hither and yon to see Cindy Sheehan get arrested for the 15th time that week, or Charlie Sheen unveil his critically acclaimed the-World-Trade-Center-was-a-controlled-explosion conspiracy theory. The "Hot Shots! Part Deux" star is apparently an expert in that field, and he'd never seen commercial property break up that quickly since Heidi Fleiss' hooker ring. Anyway, Susan Sarandon's going to play Cindy in the movie, or maybe she's playing Charlie, or both -- either way, they might as well give her the Oscar during the opening titles.

But, while Charlie Sheen is undoubtedly a valiant leader, you couldn't help noticing it was followers the anti-war crowd seemed to be short of on the third anniversary. The next weekend half a million illegal immigrants -- whoops, sorry, half a million fine upstanding members of the Undocumented-American community-- took to the streets, and you suddenly realized what a big-time demonstration is supposed to look like. These guys aren't even meant to be in the country and they can organize a better public protest movement than an anti-war crowd that's promoted 24/7 by the media and Hollywood.

Comments:
Unrelated: Coke Blak is back on my blog again. I know, I know. But it's an addiction!

Nicole,

I think we just visited each other at exactly the same time again. This is more than a little creepy.

The combination of low turnout for anti-war protests, and surveys showing at least half (probably more) Americans questioning Iraq involvement, makes me believe there's a tremendous amount of untapped resentment in the US.

If somebody, or some group, can figure out how to focus this frustration and rage, politics as we know it are in for some sea changes.

It won't be ANSWER, or the IWW, or even MoveOn. Just too fringe for most folks.

Seneca,

I think illegal immigration fuels far more "resentment" and "rage".

Buy Danish,

One thing I don't understand is why legal immigrants aren't more upset about illegal immigrants. The low skilled, but working legals are the first ones hurt.

It gives some credence to the people that think this is more an invasion than an immigration and might even explain El Presidente Kerry and his silly radio address.

It's an invasion alright.

What I don't like is linking anything to citizenship. Give them temporary or seasonal work passes, make them (or Mexico) post a bond than can be drawn against for emergencies (refundable when they leave if funds weren't used up) but make them go through the normal channels for citizenship.

Buy Danish,

I don't think a lot of them even want citizenship. Here's what J.D. Hayworth had to say.

“When you see the Mexican flags and other flags – rather than American flags – being hoisted at these demonstrations, you essentially are getting this message: ‘Yes, we are here illegally. No, we do not believe this to be your country. We do not believe in your laws . . . and we don’t believe you’re going to do anything about it.’”

That's what happens when you bring Marxists into the picture.

Hopefully the actual citizens of this country are really pi##ed at what they saw last week. Just the idea that there are influential groups named La Raza and the National Council of La Raza should be a wake up call.

BTW, I don't buy this claim that it was "spontaneous". Why were they all wearing white shirts?

Buy Danish,

It wasn't spontaneous at all. Spanish language radio had been ginning it up for a couple of weeks.

They were smart enough or devious enough to tell people to take American flags, but even they couldn't influence that.

Seneca- If somebody, or some group, can figure out how to focus this frustration and rage, politics as we know it are in for some sea changes.

That was Feingold and his censure, but since the rest of the Democrats refused to join him they lost their chance to grab hold of these Voters.

RW- One thing I don't understand is why legal immigrants aren't more upset about illegal immigrants.

It's the whole: Everyone knows someone who was or is illegal. But don't worry a couple more days or a week of this "LA Raza" or "Reconquista" c.rap and marchers are going to loose the support they are getting from most legal immigrants.

BD - What I don't like is linking anything to citizenship. Give them temporary or seasonal work passes

That where most legal immigrants are hoping this debate ends up.

I just think in the US (or actually any country) someone who has an honest job does not deserve to be living like this.

DavidU,

Are they going to use that in a new Coke ad.

Homeless immigrants prefer the refreshing taste of Coca-Cola

RW - Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper...Doesn't really matter. Endorsement money is still money. What ever gets the rent paid.

DavidU,

the rage is there. The lack of support among Senators and voters for the Feingold censure measure just shows that's not how people want to show it.

I think Feingold's move was politically motivated anyway. A gamble. If the voters get really antagonistic over Bush (like they were with Nixon in 1974, 2 years after Watergate) he can crow, "I was first! I was first! Lookit me! I was first!"

This is a bit off topic, but I knew that if there was anyplace I could post this valuable information, it was here!

Ultimate free porn site!

Caution: No one under 18 permitted. Sunglasses, shabby raincoat and dirty fedora required.

Seneca,

What would it take for your rage to go away?

Seneca,

I didn't venture past the home page of that porn site (pretty girl, but the "sticky" stuff is a turn off). Can we assume that since it is called "Brainshrub" that this is where Bush would go if he were so inclined?

Buy Danish,

You can go to my "Best Blond Joke Ever" link and find the same thing as Seneca's porn spam.

...Fool me twice, shame on me.

My instincts and intuition appear to be finely tuned today. Therefore I will go out on a limb and say that I know that CyMc is guilty and not wait for a trial.

I'll go out on a limb and say she will never be convicted.

RW,

Right you are!

RW,

I hadn't noticed the "best blond joke ever" link on your site. Thanks for noting it. It is indeed a kissing cousin to the "best porn ever site" Both are rated, at worst, PG-13.

Buy Danish,

Both are derivative of this vaudeville classic:

No soap. Radio!!

All can be viewed safely, with no grossout quotient. That's part of the joke.
